The Red River Gorge area of Kentucky is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a wide range of activities and attractions. It can be helpful to stop by one of two Visitors Centers (Gladie or the Slade Welome Center) in the area to get local maps and information, as cell service is not always reliable. When you’re ready to set out and explore, here are some of the top things to do in the Red River Gorge area:

1.     Hiking: The Red River Gorge area is home to many beautiful trails and scenic overlooks, making it a great destination for hiking. Some popular hiking trails in the area include the Gray's Arch Trail, the Double Arch Trail, and the Indian Staircase Trail. A hiking guide service we recommend is Red River Gorge Experiences, they can take you on a private guided hike and tell you all about the history and culture of the area.

2.     Rock climbing: The Red River Gorge is known for its abundant natural sandstone cliffs, making it a popular destination for rock climbers. There are many different routes and challenges for climbers of all skill levels. Several guiding companies exist, including Bluegrass Climbing School.

3.     Cabins and Camping: Want to sleep within nature? The Red River Gorge is home to many beautiful rental cabins and campsites, offering the perfect opportunity to spend some time outdoors and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. Sunset Rock Cabin actually sits on a ridgeline with a private overlook, perfect for a morning cup of coffee or watching a gorgeous sunset.

4.     Kayaking and rafting: The Red River Gorge is home to the Wild and Scenic Red River, as well as several nearby ponds and lakes, offering opportunities for kayaking and paddling. You can explore the area's waterways and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way. Water levels can vary, so check local conditions before venturing out on the water.

5.     Take a driving tour: Leaving from the Slade exit off of the Mountain Parkway, take a relaxing drive througout the Red River Gorge, passing through the iconic Nada Tunnel, traveling across the Red River, and stopping for roadside overlooks along Highway 715. Don’t miss a chance to snag some ice cream on your way through Pine Ridge at The Brick!

Go have an adventure! Opportunities to explore natural attractions such as arches, waterfalls, creeks, and wildlife are abound! Natural Bridge, Sky Bridge, and Creation Falls should be at the top of your list for places to explore. These scenic places in the Daniel Boone National Forest are perfect for excursions and taking in the natural beauty of the area.
