The Benefits of Staying in Family-Owned Rental Cabin in the Red River Gorge

My name is Mike, and I’m a full time filmmaker and photographer currently based in Lexington, Kentucky. I own an operate Sunset Rock Cabin.

Sometime around 2012 I started making regular trips to the Red River Gorge to go rock climbing, often camping or sleeping at a friend’s house. I always used to dream about having my own cabin in the RRG, and some 10+ years later I finally was able to make that dream come true!

I stay at the cabin myself several times a month to enjoy the peaceful setting, the views, and the benefit of being close to all of the hiking, climbing, and scenery the area has to offer. When I’m not planning to be there, I make it available for rent, and handle the cleaning and management myself. Here’s a few reasons why I think it’s better to rent from a local owner rather than a larger management company:

  • Personalized service: When you stay at a family-owned rental cabin, you are likely to receive personalized service and attention from the owners. This can make your stay more comfortable and enjoyable, as the owners will be able to provide you with personalized recommendations and assistance.

  • Local knowledge: Family-owned rental cabins are often run by people who are familiar with the local area and can provide you with valuable insights and tips on what to see and do during your stay. This can enhance your vacation and help you make the most of your time in the area.

  • Authentic experiences: Staying at a family-owned rental cabin can provide you with a more authentic and genuine experience of the local culture and lifestyle. You will have the opportunity to learn about the area from the people who live there, and to get a sense of what it is like to be a local.

  • Support for local businesses: When you choose to stay at a family-owned rental cabin, you are supporting a local owner and helping to sustain the local economy. This can be a rewarding way to contribute to the community during your stay.

Based in Kentucky, Mike's passion is creating documentary-style films and photography related to outdoor adventure, travel, and conservation, but it can’t be all red bulls and high-fives, so some tourism and commercial work fill in the gaps.

Mike is an avid adventurer, having summited Kilimanjaro twice, helping out on the local SAR team, and routinely establishing first ascents in both rock and ice.
